SOUND TIGERSuperiorPORTABLE HEADPHONE AMPLIFIER

Chosen by engineering. Tuned by ear.

Superior is an amplifier built out of respect for the artist.

Everything that is in the recording, we want you to hear.

We removed as much as we could from the signal path and spared nothing on the power supply, so that your player and your earphones can sound exactly as they are, only larger and with a firmer core. That is the whole purpose of this amplifier.

“Soft, yet powerful. Clear, yet never harsh.” That is how one of the first listeners described it. It is exactly the sound we were after.

Balanced in, single-ended out

The input of Superior is a balanced line. Two wires carry the signal in opposite polarity, so noise picked up along the way cancels out. It is the standard in professional audio, and a proven way to carry a signal. Inside the amplifier, the Hot and Cold paths never touch each other directly.

The output, on the other hand, is deliberately single-ended.

In balanced drive, the Hot and Cold signals face each other across the earphone driver and interact. The further you push resolution and power, the more the two amplifier circuits begin to “sing along” with each other. The theory was known; during development we confirmed it with our own ears.

Balanced transmission and balanced drive share a name, but they are different things. Carrying a signal and driving an earphone are different physical events. Superior’s BAL-SE topology is that difference, reflected directly in the design.

Combining the + and − balanced inputs into a single-ended output (left channel)

Built to drive, not just to play

To deliver 1.6 W + 1.6 W with headroom to spare, Superior carries a 15 W-class DC-DC converter and separate LDO regulators for the left and right channels. For a portable amplifier, that is a generous power supply design.

  • Low-noise, high-fidelity op-amps
  • PLMCAP 10 µF + C0G 220 nF bypass capacitors on both rails
  • In-house designed 15 W-class DC-DC converter
  • Separate LDO regulators for L and R channels
  • Mute relay to prevent pop noise

Why SOUND TIGER amplifiers have no volume control

There is no volume knob on a SOUND TIGER amplifier. You set the level on your player. Some find this inconvenient; it is a choice made for the sound.

A volume control changes the sound most where you use it most

Turning a volume control changes the impedance the amplifier presents to the source. Depending on the wiper position, that impedance forms a high-frequency filter together with the small stray capacitance at the input of the next stage, and the filter changes with every setting.

The effect is largest not at minimum or maximum, but in the middle of the range. That is exactly the level an IEM listener uses every day.

Stepped attenuators, transformer volume controls, digital volume: each addresses the problem, and each pays a different price.

Modern players lose no bits when you turn the volume down

Digital volume used to be avoided because the level was reduced within the same bit depth as the source. The quieter the music, the more of the lowest bits were discarded, and resolution was lost.

Today’s major DAC chips (ESS, AKM, Cirrus Logic and others) adjust the volume inside the chip, at a bit width far wider than the source, so the information in the recording is fully preserved.

The volume on your player can now be trusted as it is. So SOUND TIGER removed the variable resistor from the amplifier and let the signal pass straight through.

Change the volume, and the sound does not change. If Superior seems to “make the original sound simply larger,” this is one of the reasons.

What early listeners said

Listeners who tried Superior before launch described it this way:

  • Soft and natural, with a solid coreSmooth and free of harshness, yet every sound keeps its full presence. “A soft amplifier” does not do it justice.
  • Brings out the music without repainting itRather than boosting a particular band for effect, it enlarges what the player and the earphones already have, naturally.
  • Vocals become clearerThe overall character is gentle, yet the outline and presence of the voice come forward, without turning unnaturally sharp.
  • Sibilance does not stingOnly the sharp edge of “s” sounds softens; the openness of the voice and the detail in the treble remain. It was not a trick of darkening the highs, which the reviewer rated especially highly.

In one line: “Soft, yet powerful. Clear, yet never harsh.” That is the sound we aimed for.

Power and charging

  • While USB-PD is connected, Superior runs on USB power and the batteries are not used. You can listen while charging.
  • Batteries: six AA NiMH cells. Six Fujitsu “white” cells (HR-3UTC) are included. Fujitsu “black” cells (HR-3UTHC) give longer playing time.
  • The charger is built in, with full-charge detection and a charging profile that is gentle on the cells.

Protection

  • DC protection: if a DC offset appears at the output, the amplifier mutes. If it does not recover, a service indication is shown.
  • Overheat warning: alerts you if the unit gets hot, for example with a player stacked on top.
  • Battery fault detection: detects missing cells, failed cells and open circuits.

Batteries

Installing and replacing the batteries

Six AA NiMH batteries (the included Fujitsu white cells) are fitted to the circuit board inside the unit. For replacements, too, use only batteries from reliable makers such as Fujitsu, Panasonic (eneloop) and IKEA (LADDA). Do not use unbranded low-cost batteries sold online.

Before you start, turn the power off and unplug the USB cable.

  1. Remove the screws and the rear FP

Use the supplied driver to remove the four screws, then take off the rear faceplate (rear FP, the side with the USB-C port).

  2. Pull out the board

Hold the board by its edges and slowly pull it out. Do not touch the components on the board.

  3. Insert the batteries

Insert six batteries in the direction marked on the board.

  4. Put it back

Slide the board all the way in, fit the rear FP, and tighten the screws firmly with the supplied driver.

Beware of static electricity

While the board is exposed, static electricity can damage its components.

  • Before you start, touch a metal water tap with your bare hand to discharge static from your body.
  • Then touch the aluminium case of the unit before you begin.
  • Do not touch the components or contacts on the board.
  • Take extra care on dry days. Avoid working in clothing that builds up static, such as sweaters and fleece, and avoid working on a carpet.

Never put the board down on metal

If the board touches metal it will short-circuit, which can cause damage or heat. Place it on a non-metal surface such as a wooden desk or a sheet of paper.

Never insert a battery the wrong way round

Reversing + and − can cause damage, heat or an accident. After inserting, check all six batteries against the markings.

At the start of loosening and the end of tightening, push the driver toward the screw as you turn it

Turning without enough pressure will strip the screw heads, and the screws can no longer be removed.

Take care if you use a hex key

The supplied driver is a Vessel precision driver. We deliberately chose a slim one so that it cannot apply enough force to damage the screws. An ordinary hex key applies force easily and can overtighten and damage the screws or the case.

Basic use

Basic use

Superior has no volume control. Set the volume on your player.

Connect from your player's headphone output (phone out) as a rule. If your player has a line output with adjustable volume (variable line out), that is even better. Do not use a fixed line output: it plays at full volume and can damage your hearing and your earphones or headphones.

  1. Connect

Connect your player's 4.4 mm balanced output (phone out or variable line out) to IN with an interconnect (IC) cable, and plug your earphones or headphones into OUT.

  2. Turn the player down

Before switching on, turn the player's volume well down.

  3. Switch on

Turn the power switch on. The white lamp lights, and after about 1–2 seconds the unit is ready to play.

  4. Set the volume

While playing, raise the volume on the player a little at a time.

Gain switch (LO GAIN)

  • Normal gain is 2×; LO GAIN gives 1×.
  • As a guide, use LO GAIN for sensitive earphones and normal gain (2×) for everything else.

About the output

  • OUT is a 4.4 mm 5-pole single-ended output. Earphones and headphones with a 4.4 mm plug can be used as they are.

Switching off

  • Switching off during playback makes a small click. This is not a fault.
Charging

Charging

Power and charging go through the USB-C port on the rear panel. While a USB cable is connected, Superior runs from USB power and does not use the batteries.

Connect with a USB-C to USB-C cable

Both the charger and Superior have USB-C ports. Chargers and cables with a USB-A (rectangular) connector will neither power nor charge the unit.

When connected correctly, the green OK lamp on the rear lights (it is separate from the blue CHG lamp on the front)
Connected to a 12 V AC adapter with the external clean power cable
12 V external powerWith the external clean power cable (sold separately), Superior can be powered and charged from a 12 V AC adapter (DC plug 5.5 mm / 2.1 mm).
Note: with some iFi products, Superior may not power on reliably. We are investigating.

Power sources

  • USB PD chargers and power banks (20 W or more recommended; Superior takes 12 V or 9 V)
  • 12 V AC adapter + external clean power cable (sold separately)

Power sources you cannot use

  • 5 V-only chargers without USB PD (such as USB-A chargers) will neither power nor charge the unit.

Cable

  • Thin, low-cost cables may not charge the unit.

OK lamp (green)

  • Located next to the USB-C port on the rear panel, it lights when the correct voltage is arriving. It only shows whether power is arriving; charging status is shown by the blue CHG lamp on the front panel.
  • If it does not light, check that the charger supports USB PD, and check the cable.

How charging works

  • You can charge while playing with the power on, or with the power off.
  • Charging while playing is a supplement and takes longer. In summer the unit warms up and charging may not progress.
  • After a full charge, charging will not restart until the amplifier has been used for about 45 minutes or the white lamp starts to wink.

Keeping the batteries healthy

  • Every few charges, use the amplifier for 2 hours or more, then charge without playing.
  • About once a month, use it until the red lamp appears, then fully charge at room temperature.
  • Avoid charging where warm air from a heater blows directly on the unit, or in a hot room.
  • Use six cells of the same brand and lot, and start using them at the same time.

Cautions

  • Do not remove the batteries while charging.
  • Charge soon after the red lamp appears.
  • Remove the batteries if you will not use the amplifier for a long time.
